Herttua is situated on an isthmus that formed part of the Finnish defensive system “Salpa Line” during the Second World War. An intresting feature of the Veneenniemi Line is the doubling of defences, so that the enemy could be fired from both sides of the isthmus. The remains of trenches can still be seen in the terrain around the hotel, as well firing platforms and a dugout.

Herttua houses a local military history exhibition, where visitors can learn more about the Winter War and Continuation War, as well as the post-war years. The outdoor exhibition shows typical larger weapons used by the Finnish Defence Forces during the wars; field guns and anti-aircraft guns, as well as other military hardware.

The permanent exhibition indoors “On the Last Line” consists of material from the Salpa Line and other battle areas fought over between 1939 and 1945. The theme of the exhibition is to depict the sort of life the soldiers at the front endured, as well as how the war affected the civilian population. There are on display infantry weapons, maps, medals, other military items such as uniforms and historical material from the Salpa Line.
