Saimaa Ringed Seal

The Saimaa Ringed Seal is a highlyendangered species that lives only in the waters of Saimaa. It is estimated that at present their population amounts to only about 280 individuals, but thanks to conservation measures their number has recently been gradually increasing. The Saimaa Ringed Seal, which has adapted to life in freshwater lakes, was cut off from the sea and trapped in the Saimaa lake basin about 9000 years ago, following the Ice Age. The most important habitats of the seal are Savonlinna and its surroundings, Lake Pihlajavesi, and the national parks of Linnansaari and Kolovesi.
